Jeungchan was awarded a Spark Award at the 2019 Martinos Center Open House for his exemplary committment to the core values of the center. The director, Bruce Rose, read out the nomination text at the awarding that will ring true for anyone who has met or worked with Jeungchan in any capacity.
Proud of our very own super-postdoc Jeungchan Lee for winning and receiving inaugural @MGHMartinos Center Spark award from Martinos director Bruce Rosen! pic.twitter.com/EvGIsfd1jM— Vitaly Napadow (@VitalyNapadow) May 30, 2019
“Jeungchan is an outstanding member of The Napadow Lab and has been a mentor to myself and many others in the lab in every way possible. While he is a stellar example of each of these core values, I chose to nominate him for the “Passionate” core value as he is the “glue” of the lab and puts his heart into not only his own work but the work of every other member of our group. He plays an integral role in each one of our projects and he never hesitates to put his own work aside for a moment to prioritize helping others. While our lab has several ongoing projects, many of the post docs and RAs have their own projects to work on, including Jeungchan. Even so, he takes the time to understand the work of everyone else, and he is continuously asking thought provoking questions and helping find solutions. He is patient and kindhearted and does everything with the best of intentions. Some of the few examples of his passionate work ethic are below:
– When our group was testing our “hyperscanning” paradigm in two simultaneous scanners one evening, we experienced several software and hardware malfunctions. After our slot ended and both bays were empty Jeungchan stayed after to try and fix everything and then explained what he did to myself and another postdoc so that we would know what to do if it happened again.
– He has soldered wires together to help fix broken hardware so that study
visits didn’t have to be cancelled.
– He sat with me for countless hours teaching me how to code script to analyze my own data – and took genuine interest in my results, encouraging me
the entire way.
– He is the first one in the lab every morning and one of the last to leave, spending a lot of time on his datasets and publications.
– He has made extremely thorough scripts for the quality assurance of autonomic data and the motion correction of fMRI data that are invaluable for all members of our lab.
Jeungchan is extremely humble and a lot of the reason that I feel confident in my own abilities as a researcher comes from observing him and his dedication to science. His patience and perseverance are nothing short of inspiring and he really deserves this award.”
