On April 17th, , Vitaly gave a presentation at the NIH Blueprint Workshop: The Science of Interoception. His talk, Therapeutic engagement of interoceptive pathways with respiratory-gated vagus nerve stimulation, was part of a session focused on Leveraging and Manipulating Interoception for Disease Intervention. Interoception, or the perception of the internal state of the body, is becoming increasingly recognized as a major factor in chronic pain conditions. Neuroimaging studies suggest commonalities between neural networks activated by pain and other interoceptive stimuli. The Napadow Lab incorporates assessments of interoception in many of our studies that relate to chronic conditions as part of our pursuit of a better understanding of pain through imaging.
